Oscar Hawkins, dance
Oscar Hawkins is a native of Brandywine, Maryland. After studying voice and drama, he ambitiously decided to add dancing to his repertoire. In 1987, Oscar enrolled in the Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts under the supervision of Madame Lynn Welters. Shortly thereafter, he was recommended by Mikhail Lavrovsky to attend the Kirov Ballet Academy (Universal Ballet Academy) where he trained intensively with Rudolph Kharatian, Alla Sizova, Ludmila Morkovina, Nikolai Morozov and Vladimir Djuluhadze.
He has danced with Kirov Ballet Company II, Ballet International, Tulsa Ballet, Deutsche Opera, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, Spoleto Festival Ballet and performed leading roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, Paquita, Esmerelda, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire,Venetian Carnival, Alberto Alonzo’s “Carmen”, Jerey Holder’s “Douglas” and “Troy Games”, George Balanchine’s “Four Temperaments” and “Prodigal Son”, Vladimir Anguelov’s “Forte”, Alonso King’s “Signs and Wonders” and Dennis Nahats “A Midsummer Night Dream” and “Go Daddy O”.
Oscar the first Black ballet dancer to dance in the Oleg Vinogradov Foundation All Star Ballet Gala 2017 at Oktobre Theater in St. Petersburg Russia, has recieved critical acclaim for his choreography “Strange Fruit” (danced to the vocals of Billie Holliday) and “Cris D’Enfant” (music written and sung by Hawkins).Mr. Hawkins has performed in Las Vegas with Cirque Du Soleil’s “Mystère”, Lead Act with Belle Et Foux in Berlin,Germany and worked with Hinton Battle as a Lead Character Dancer in the Motion Picture “The Great Observer”.
Oscar is currently Artistic Director of Ballet Arts Academy, Director of Dance for Kirov Academy of Ballet’s Outreach program and Creator/ Director of The Oscar Talent showcase Competition. Proud Choreographer and dancer for the Anastasia Kim “The One I Feed” bene t for St. John Hopkins Hospital. Oscar is a guest judge and choreographer for Hinton Battle’s new Japanese TV series “On The Way To Broadway” 2014-2015. He also appear as choreographer and dance master for the National Master Class Circuit for Pre-Professional Dancers 2014-2015.
Mr. Hawkins recently Premiered choreography for Tony Small’s Musical “Ruka” and Opera “Qa-dar” at Kennedy Center in Washington DC, “Truth” the musical, The World Bank Gala 2015 and CNN Hosts the 70th Anniversary of World War 2 at the Russian and Eisenhower Gala; as well as,Principal Guest Dancer for the Russian White Nights Gala at Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts 2017.
